Abenda Sohn’s Dream Country — hosted by Brown Arts Institute — is a conceptual research about the immigrant Liberian community in Rhode Island. Sohn investigates identity strategies, the theatre of memory and modalities of representation long prevalent in the United States. Through staged photography and biographical interviews with members of a recurring home fellowship, the artist examines the rituals of intimacy and reconstitutions of home in a distant land. Taking its title from Shannon Gibney’s 1999 novel about intergenerational inheritances, Dream Country presents Sohn as a searching spirit and a close observer, at home in his adopted country yet gainfully critical of its colonial legacies.
